Marble fountain at Kamari
Spread the word
The marble fountain is located just before the entrance of the traditional village of Kamari (which is 19 km from Heraklion), in the area of Palia Vrysi, to the left of the provincial road Kamari - Keramoutsi.
It dates back to the 19th century and in the past, the whole village was watered by this fountain. It is of similar construction to that of Tylissos, except that, in this case, the recess-drum is crowned by an arch. The ends of the arc are supported on arches, i.e. pilasters with capitals and shaped bases.
According to tradition, it was built during the Turkish occupation as a donation of a Hanumissa (Turkish woman) to the villagers. Above the fountain, there is a plaque stating her dedication in Arabic.
