Koules Fodele Fortress or Kastelos Kefala
Spread the word
The small Ottoman fortress is built on a hill, Kefala, west of the village of Fodele (which is 30 km from Heraklion). The purpose of the fortress was to supervise and control the bay of Fodele. It was built at the end of the 19th century (1867 or 1868), like most "kouledes" in Crete. "Koules" comes from the Turkish word kule (of Arabic origin), which means "fortress" or "tower".
The visitor can see the ruins of the buildings attached to the central cul-de-sac, the floor plan of which was rectangular. Around Koules Fodele, two more koule(de)s survive: Koules Kefala and the "Red Tower".
