Iraklis Kokkinidis’ Factory
Spread the word
The traditional olive mill (factory) is located in the village of Keramoutsi, which is 3.5 km from Tylissos and 15 km from Heraklion. According to tradition, the mill belonged to the family of the legendary hero of the Cretan Revolutions and leader of Malevizi and Temenos, Iraklis Kokkinidis. It is a one-room building of 100 sq.m. built in the centre of the historic residential core of the village. It is a typical example of an old factory of the pre-industrial era of Crete for the grinding of olives and the production of olive oil. Inside the building, most of its equipment for the production of olive oil in the traditional way is preserved.
The traditional factory (purchased by the Municipality of Malevizi) is a remnant of the living history not only of the settlement but also of the entire area of Malevizi. The Municipality's goal is to maintain and restore the olive mill to function as a visitable monument and folklore museum.
