The old laundry at Fodele

The old laundry is located south of the village of Fodele, at Kefalovrysa, on the west bank of the river. The village of Fodele is 30 km from Heraklion and belongs to the municipality of Malevizi.

It is a monument of everyday life of the last century and a means of social contact since all the village women gathered there to wash their clothes. Its location on the west bank of the river was not accidental and was directly related to the abundance of water, one of the key features of Fodele. The old laundry is one of the few left in the whole of Crete.

It is a stone building, inside which there is a row of stone troughs and a swallow. The water reaches the canals through a stone pipe and then pours towards the river. Above the front door, the visitors can see the sign that informs them that the laundry was built in 1915 at the expense of the community.
