The legend of the bell of the Church of Agios Georgios in Kamariotis
Spread the word
The church of Agios Georgios is located in the picturesque village of Kamariotis, 29 kilometres from Heraklion. The village’s name probably comes from the surname of its first settler, Kamariotis.
The three-aisled, vaulted church of Agios Georgios was built in the 16th century and dominated the peak of a rock.
According to local tradition, the semantron of the church of Agios Georgios bell had a golden bullet and rang as far as Chania. When the Turks entered Crete, the inhabitants hid the bell in a safe place so that it would not fall into the hands of the Turks. In later years, the residents said that the most likely hiding place was the same rock on which the temple was built. Of course, this was never confirmed. In fact, there is also a famous couplet about the bell and its excellent sound.
