Here you will find the oldest and most continuous and productive vineyard in Europe, as well as the unique varieties of the Cretan land.
Favourable climatic conditions give excellent grape varieties, from which the wonderful wines that accompany one of the richest and healthiest cuisines in the world come.
The most famous varieties are the following:
Liatiko
Exclusively Cretan grape, Liatiko, is considered one of the oldest Greek varieties. It is a variety that matures in mid-July, from where it gets its name. From the end of July until the first fortnight of August, it is harvested mainly by traditional viticulturists in the coastal areas of Crete. Its main feature is the pale, red colour.
Vilana
Without a doubt, Vilana is the "sovereign" of the white vines of Crete. It dominates the vineyards of the whole island and is a productive variety, which gives large quantities of relatively neutral wines. The wines of the Vilana variety have a moderate deep yellow colour, moderate acidity and alcohol, cool, lemony taste and aromas reminiscent of citrus, apple, jasmine and herbs.
Thrapsathiri
It is a white variety cultivated throughout Crete with aromas mainly reminiscent of melon and peach. Thrapsathiri matures in the first 15 days of September, and due to the neutrality of its aromas, it is ideal to accompany dishes with rich flavours.
