Bromonero Plateau
The Bromonero Plateau (also known as Lima's Pit) is located 10 km west of the village of Krousonas, which is 21 km from Heraklion. Specifically, it is located in a beautiful location east of the top of Skoinakas (at an altitude of 1300 meters), where the University of Crete Observatory is located. The access to the plateau is through a dirt road that passes through the gorge of Chalasia, which starts from Livadi and ends at Krousonas.
It is said that the plateau got its name from the words "vrimo", which means "strong"), and "sacred", while there is also the version that says that the Turks once polluted the water of the plateau to force the remaining guerrillas there to look for water elsewhere and thus capture them.
At the Bromonero Plateau, you can find one of the most beautiful and unspoiled holm oak forests in Crete, full of holm oaks and maples. On the plateau, the visitor can also find benches, fountains and barbecues, as well as a shelter with the basics.
Finally, the church of Agios Georgios, built in 1978, dominates the plateau. This church was an oblation of the chief of Kroussani, Charalambos Giannadakis, to Agios Georgios. He had called for help when members of the rebel group were surrounded by German soldiers. Eventually, the guerrillas managed to escape thanks to the miraculous power of St. George.
