Old Watermill
Outside the village of Gonies, at the height of the junction for Kamaraki, the so-called "Gonianos" watermill (1910), which has been designated as a protected monument, is preserved in a pretty good condition. It is one of the many watermills that adorned the ravines of the whole of Crete and ground grain in the past.
The construction of the stone watermill follows the standard way of construction of all simple watermills, with one exception. Since the area does not have large, in water supply, springs, instead of a water ditch, there was a cistern where the little amount of water from the spring ended. When the cistern was full, water was released in a rush toward the conduit to carry away the mill impeller.
The watermill door creates an arch at the top with carved alabaster and bears a design coat of arms, probably of the owner. Another stone at the window has an inscription that reads "the year 1902". Finally, a tall cypress tree has been standing for decades next to the traditional watermill.
