The picturesque village of Kitharida is located northeast of Krousonas and is 21 km from Heraklion. The village is built at an altitude of 220 meters and has about 72 permanent residents. Guitarida was destroyed by the earthquake in 1856. In 1577, Francesco Barozzi refers to the village as Chitaridha, while in 1583, in the Kastrofylakas census, it was referred to as Chitharida.
Inside the village, the visitor can see the church of Agios Fanourios, which, in the past, was the katholikon of the Panagia or Kera Eleusis Abbey. The beautiful geometry of the temple blends harmoniously with the natural landscape and its unique decorative elements.
