Sanctuary of the Peak
At the foothills of the settlement Gonies, which is 26 km from Herakleion, and specifically at the top of Philorimos hill, the peak sanctuary of the Middle Minoan era is located. The sanctuary was unveiled during works for the foundation of the temple of the Prophet Eliah. Mount Mother and Potnia Theron were worshipped in the sanctuary.
The top sanctuary consists of two consecutive, carelessly built spaces. Sections of a paved floor that was, probably, outdoor are saved in one of the two. Approximately in the centre, two unequal, upright slabs placed vertically, on which a horizontal one rested, were preserved. This place was the altar or the table of offerings, as confirmed by the bones found around. Parts of figurines were also found in and around the sanctuary.
