Museum of Traditional Instruments "THYRATHEN" at Krousonas
The "Thyrathen" Museum was founded in 2012 and is based in the historic village of Krousonas in the Municipality of Malevizi. In December 2023, it opened its doors to the public in its new space in the centre of the city of Heraklion, at Riga Feraiu Square 9, opposite the church of Agios Minas.
The "Thirathen" Museum operates as a multidimensional space that combines the rich heritage of art and culture with modern educational activities. It acts as a gateway to the exploration of art and history, holding events and actions ranging from instrument workshops, allowing children, teenagers and adults to practice the art of music, to music seminars and concerts that play their role as windows in the cultural heritage of the Mediterranean. At the same time, it has and exhibits a collection of musical instruments, one of the largest on the island of Crete.
The museum collaborates with the educational institutions of Greece in order to implement school visits to the museum site of an academic nature, accompanied by various activities, such as musical and kinetic games, guided tours, and screenings. Visitors to the museum have the pleasure of experiencing an interactive tour of its space as the exhibits 'come alive' in front of them. With the possibility of the digital tour available, the visitor can obtain important information about the musical instruments exhibited in the museum and retrieve photographic and audio-visual archival material.
