Church of Panagia
The church of Panagia is located in the village of Korfes, which is 20 km from Heraklion.
It is a building of the 16th century and is dedicated to the Genesis of the Virgin Mary. In the past, the church was decorated with frescoes inside, which unfortunately have been covered with layers of plaster. Today, it survives, having been renovated after it was destroyed in 1866. The temple has two entrances. The main entrance is on the west side, while the second is on the north with the addition of a newer bell tower. Inside the temple, the visitor can see a stone slab, probably the founding one, with an inscription engraved and the date 1603.
According to documentary material of the Venetian period, the church was jus patronatus ("right of protection") of the feudal family of Francesco Mudazzo, to whom the estate district of the village of Korfes belonged in the 16th and 17th centuries.
