Krousonas Gorge
The Krousonas gorge (also known as the Gaidourorachi gorge) is formed 3 km west of Krousonas (21.8 km from Heraklion) in the eastern Psiloritis. It is also called Gaidourorachi (Donkey back) due to the shape of the mountain, which from afar resembles a donkey hump. Specifically, the gorge is located between the peaks of Boskero (1197 m.) and Gournos (1293 m.). The canyon is quite wild, while small waterfalls are formed in places. The Arizano spring, which runs all year round, is also impressive.
The ancient Minoan path that the Minoans used to ascend to ancient Zominthos passes through the gorge. Also, the visitor can follow the road that climbs from the Monastery of Agia Irini in Krousonas to the Livadi Plateau. This road runs parallel to the riverbed from the gorge's southern slopes, and the view is of unique beauty. Finally, there is an old lime kiln in the middle of the route.
