Loutraki is built at an altitude of 1,199 metres on the eastern slopes of Mount Voskero (a branch of Psiloritis). It is 20.9 km from Heraklion and has about 200 permanent residents. The village consists of two settlements, Apano Loutraki and Kato Loutraki. The village's main church is dedicated to the Entrances of the Virgin Mary and is located near the Jerusalem Monastery.
The name of the village is due to the baths (hot) of Roman times. In 1577, it was mentioned as Lutracchi by Barozzi, while in 1583, in the Kastrofylakas census, the village is mentioned as Lutrachi.
In Kato Loutraki, the visitor can see the churches of Agios Georgios and Agios Dimitrios. Also, in the settlement, the ruins of the baths of Roman times are preserved.
