Church of Panagia Polemissa
The church of Panagia Polemissa is located in Krousonas, which is 21 km from Heraklion. Specifically, it is located in a rural location of the village, among olive trees.
The small church got its name because it was the seat of war councils. It is a one-room church dating back to the 16th century. The temple was completely renovated in 2002. At some point in the niche of the sanctuary, as well as at other places inside the temple, the visitor can see Christograms. In other words, they are monograms of Christ made of beeswax, myrrh and frankincense with which the space was consecrated during its inauguration.
During the revolution of 1866, the church of Panagia Polemissa (along with the temples of Christ, Agios Charalambos, Panagia and Agios Georgios) was desecrated by the Turks, who broke all the icons and snatched the sacred utensils that were inside.
Finally, a short distance from the temple, a small cave with carvings and marine fossils is known as "the Kargiolis' Cave ".
