Cape Stavros (Cross)
Cape Stavros (also known as Akron Zeus) is located on the north side of the prefecture of Heraklion. It is an elongated rock that penetrates the Cretan Sea like a tongue for several meters and specifically on the coastline between Fodele and Agia Pelagia villages. Stavros is a wild and, at the same time, beautiful area with very deep waters and strong north winds. At the edge of the cape, the visitor can see the small chapel of Agios Sozon, which celebrates September 7th, as well as the small lighthouse.
The lighthouse of Cape Stavros was built in 1921 and operated systematically until 1949. It was built simultaneously as the lighthouse of Cape Lithinos and Cape Koufonissi due to the need to install lighthouses during the Asia Minor Campaign to serve ship missions to the Aegean Sea and the coasts of Asia Minor. Today, the visitor can only see a simple metal structure since the Germans, who used it as a shooting target, destroyed the lighthouse.
