"Red Tower" Fortress at Fodele
The small Ottoman fortress is built on a hill southeast of the village of Fodele (which is 30 km from Heraklion). The fortress, located 1.5 km from the coast, was intended to supervise the bay and the beach of the area. It was built at the end of the 19th century, like most “kouledes” in Crete. "Koules" comes from the Turkish word kule (of Arabic origin), which means "fortress" or "tower". It is one of the three coastal cliffs of Fodele that controlled the passages of the area. Today, the fireplace of the tower is still preserved.
Access to the tower is difficult due to the dense vegetation and the barbed wire installed by the breeders.
