Paleokastro Gorge
Paleokastro gorge is located near the coastal settlement of Paleokastro, which is 8 km from Heraklion. The canyon starts 500 metres from the homonymous beach covered with white pebbles. It is quite passable for walking or cycling, thanks to the rural road that exists in the middle of its route. Here, the visitor can find many typical plants of the Cretan biodiversity, such as oregano, wild thyme, laurel etc. Also, along the way, there are many caves and springs.
Inside the gorge of Paleokastro is the cave church of Kera Spiliotissa. The church is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi, while right next to it, the visitor can see a cell, which is now abandoned.
It should be noted that the site is not easily accessible to anyone unfamiliar with the area.
