Doxa Cave at Marathos
Doxa cave is located in the area of the village of Marathos, which is 13 km from Tylissos and 14 km from Gazi.
In the direction of Damasta (7.5 km after the junction for Tylissos), at an altitude of 463 metres, at Kaka Pila, there is the tavern called "Doxa". The tavern owners have built a small path with stairs to the cave's opening, so access is easy.
Doxa cave remains impressive. Just below is the opening of the small cave with a total length of 50 metres. A downhill corridor from the entrance leads to four rooms (with stalactites, stalagmites and small elixirs), which communicate with galleries begins. There is a platform with basins in the centre of the cave (which remains active).
The cave has long been known to the locals. In 1970, researcher Eleftherios Platakis carried out a complete exploration and mapping with the assistance of Ioannis and Stylianos Daskalakis.
A version about the origin of the place name Doxas states that the travellers from Chania to Heraklion, after a tiring course, arriving in the area shouted: "Glory (Doxa) to God". According to another version, near the cave, there was the church of Agia Doxa.
