Old fountain of Achlada
On the north side of the picturesque village of Achlada, which is 23 km from Heraklion, a stone staircase leads to two fountains. These fountains collect the water that springs from the base of the rock, just behind them. The oldest stone fountain was built in 1746, as we are informed by the inscription. The inscription was written in Ottoman script. In fact, as was usual in the inscription of the Ottoman fountains, the name of the donor, the year and the reason for the dedication were mentioned (usually with an epigram). The newer fountain was built in the early 20th century, with strong neoclassical and morphological elements.
