Mononaftis beach
The beautiful Mononaftis beach is located 1 km north of Agia Pelagia and 24 km northwest of Heraklion. It is a small, picturesque beach with clear green waters formed in a small bay close to Cape Diakori. According to the locals, the name of the beach comes from the only sailor who survived an old shipwreck. However, the big rock that rises a few meters away from the shore and resembles a sailing boat is also called Mononaftis.
The length of the beach does not exceed 80 meters. Nevertheless, it is organised with sunbeds, umbrellas and showers. Also, the visitor here can find cafes and taverns. The beach is covered with coarse sand and pebbles, but you need to be a little careful when entering the water, as there are large slabs at places. Due to its orientation, the beach is windless. Finally, its rocky bottom makes it favourable to those involved in diving. For this reason, there is a permanent diving school on the beach.
