Fodele beach
Fodele beach is 3 km away from the homonymous village, which is known as the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos. The beach is located right next to the national road Heraklion-Chania and just 26 km from Heraklion. It is a large, sandy beach (with thick pebbles at places) formed inside the bay between the cape of Stavros in the east and the hill of Kastelos in the west. The beach has been distinguished from the Blue Flag due to the exceptional quality of its waters. The tiny stone church of Agios Vassilios is also worth visiting, east of the coast.
A small rocky hill divides it into two parts, the east and the west. The visitor can enjoy swimming away from the winds and the waves on the west beach, while the east coast is more vulnerable to natural elements. The west shore is organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and water sports facilities. There are also cafes and taverns for moments of relaxation and fun. The east coast is smaller in size and is located at the exit of the Lagonika stream. It is ideal for those who prefer peace and seclusion since it is not organised. Finally, those who love nature can explore the rocks or enjoy snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters.
