Kladisos beach
The small Kladisos beach is 21 km from Heraklion and is located close to the settlement of Agia Pelagia. Here flows the small river Kladisos, which gives its name to the area. The beach with its crystal – clear, blue and green waters and fine gravel is located in front of a hotel complex and is organised with umbrellas, sunbeds and showers. The beach resembles a private one, but everyone is free to visit it. Due to its orientation, Kladisos beach is protected from the waves.
Carved, Late Minoan tombs have been found close to the coastal area of Kladisos, as well as a large public building of the 3rd-4th century AD, the Rectorate. The Rectorate operated as a meeting room for the political leaders of the ancient city of Apollonia, which probably existed here. Some of the area's ceramic findings are in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England.
