Koules Koprokefalas or Kelia at Fodele
It is the least known fortress in the area since it is not visible from the road. It is built on the top of the hill located south of the central beach of Fodele, at Koprokefalas or Kelia. The village of Fodele is 30 km from Heraklion. The small Ottoman fortress offers visual control of the entire bay but also of the Fodele valley. It was built at the end of the 19th century, like most kouledes in Crete. "Koules" comes from the Turkish word kule (of Arabic origin), which means "fortress", "tower".
The fences that exist at the point make access to the fortress almost impossible. Around Fodele, two more towers are preserved: one at the Kefalas area and the other called the "Red Tower". Koules Koprokefala was located in the middle of the three.
