Church of Panagia Keras (Genesis of the Virgin)
The church of Panagia Kera is located outside the village, at Kato Tylissos, among orchards and crops. The church is dedicated to the Genesis of the Virgin Mary and celebrates on September 8th. It is the only church from the Second Byzantine period that has survived in the area and stands out for its characteristic dome. Specifically, it belongs to the architectural type of the one-room registered church with a dome. The dome, heavy and low, with prominent archaic features, houses the central part of the main church. Despite modern interventions, the church retains many of its original architectural features.
Testimonies of old residents of the village state that there were monks' cells (at the place where, today, is the water source).
During his journey through Crete, Giuseppe Gerola (Italian historian) recorded the temple and designed its plan with the dome. In fact, he noted the following: "The church of Panagia, near Kato Tylissos, had the central part covered with a dome on a drum that came out over four arches, two of which are inside the long walls and are therefore blind."
The church's interior is simple with a simple iconostasis and three despotic icons (one that depicts the Birthday of the Virgin, the one of Christ and the one of St. John the Baptist). Externally, the space is landscaped with built-in benches for the faithful and visitors, while two fragrant jasmines embrace the temple entrance.
