Church of Panagia
The church of Panagia (Presentation of the Virgin Mary) is located on the west side of the village of Keramoutsi, which is 3.5 km from Tylissos and 15 km from Heraklion. The temple is built in a green landscape with pines, cypresses and olives. Initially, it was a single room church with frescoes all around. Today, only the eastern part (the arch of the sanctuary) survives from the original building, with interesting folk frescoes dating back to the 14th century. For unknown reasons, in the 16th century, the church was destroyed and renovated in a free cruciform church with a dome.
In the past, there was a cemetery around the temple. The tombs were unearthed during the renovation work, not only outside but also inside the temple. A stone cross of the beginning of the 20th century was also found during the works, as evidenced by the date on its surface. This cross has been placed together with the bones collected around and inside the temple in a burial monument located in the courtyard.
