Church of Agios Fanourios
Agios Fanourios is located in a fertile valley in Kitharida (which is 21 km from Heraklion). The church celebrates on the 27th of August. In the past, the church was the katholikon of the Panagia or Kera Eleusis Abbey.
From an architectural point of view, Agios Fanourios is one of the most attractive temples of Crete. It consists of three aisles and a narthex that is placed in front of the sanctuary. Above this part of the church, there are three domes, one for each aisle. The temple's exterior is decorated with circular shapes in unusual sizes (ceramic plates) and with rare paintings, including birds. The beautiful geometry of the temple blends harmoniously with the natural landscape and its unique decorative elements. Inside the church, the fresco decoration is partially preserved. Finally, in the wood-carved iconostasis, tiny, sculpted little angels stand out although it is dismantled.
