Church of Agios Georgios
The church of Agios Georgios is located in the village of Krousonas and is 21 km from Heraklion. It is a single-aisle basilica built before the Revolution of 1821 by an older woman from Krousonas named Varouchena. According to popular tradition, a rather hard rock around the church prevented its construction. In the evening, however, the rock softened, resulting in the temple's completion.
The church has been built on the ruins of an older church, of smaller dimensions, also dedicated to Agios Georgios. The foundation of the first church dates back to the First Byzantine period. Its destruction was carried out by the Turks and coincided with the period of the Cretan occupation (1645-1669).
