Monastery of Agios Ioannis Faraggitis
The ruined Monastery of Agios Ioannis Faraggitis is located in the Almyros Gorge, which flows into the Ellinoperamata beach and is 8 km from Heraklion. The Monastery had three churches from 1350 until the occupation of Crete by the Turks in 1669 when it was destroyed. Today, only the ruins of the old monastery complex remain. The main church is two-aisled and is dedicated to Agios Antonios and Agia Paraskevi with important frescoes. The small church of Agia Marina, the cemetery church of the Monastery, is next to the Katholikon. These three churches (essentially two) give the gorge one of its seven names, the Gorge of the Three Churches.
