Church of St. Basil
The small stone church of Agios Vassilios is located on the east shore of the beach of Fodele (which is 30 km from Heraklion). The church has been built quite recently on the ruins of an older church, erected during the Venetian rule in Crete. The road to the church is easily accessible by car and if you visit it late in the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a dreamy sunset.
According to Francesco Basilicata’s choreographic table, the settlement of St. Basil was on the west bank of the torrent from which the church took its name. Ruins of the settlement are preserved even today, covered under the dense vegetation.
