Agios Dimitrios Church
The majestic church of Agios (Saint) Dimitrios is located in the mountainous settlement of Gonies, which is 26 km from Herakleion. The church is located near the entrance of the settlement and stands out for its large size. The church of Agios Dimitrios basically honours three Saints. More specifically, the central aisle is dedicated to Agios Dimitrios, the right to Agios Panteleimon and the left to Agios Georgios.
The foundation of the church was made in 1952 by the then Archbishop of Crete, Eugenios Psalidakis, while the church was built with the help of fundraisers that took place both in Gonies and in the surrounding villages.
