Church of Agios Georgios
The church of Agios Georgios is built in the traditional settlement of Kalesa (Ano Kalesa), which is located 3 km southeast of Gazi. The church was built in 1878 in the style of a single-aisled basilica and was frescoed in 1997 by hagiographer D. Manousakis. Every year, on April 23rd, with all magnificence, a feast takes place on St. George’s celebration, with the Georgian horses accompanying the miraculous icon. The procession of the icon takes place in the alleys of the settlement, where the faithful invoke the equestrian form of the saint.
The church of Agios Georgios is known for the legend of the beacon. According to local tradition, the history of the beacon begins during the Turkish occupation, around 1750, when the Turks, annoyed by the actions of some patriarchal families of Fanari, decided to exterminate them. The Stratigakis family had a buoy from a church in Istanbul. When some family members arrived in the settlement of Kalesa, they donated the beacon – bell to the church of the village.
