Church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos
The two-aisled church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos is built at the highest point of the village of Achlada (which is 23 km from Heraklion), with panoramic views.
The foundation of the church dates back to the Venetian occupation and is included in the document of the Turkish archives of Heraklion. The second aisle of the church is dedicated to Saint Martyr Tryphon, patron saint of farmers.
The architecture of the church follows the philosophy of the other churches of the Municipality of Malevizi, painted in bright white colour, with red tiles and simple lines that form the main body of the church. The interior decoration is dedicated to the worship of the saint, with the sanctuary at the back of the temple. The iconostasis (which dates between 1860-1869) is also a jewel of the church, with icons of exceptional artistic value.
