Municipality of Malevizi

The Municipality of Malevizi, with a total area of 292.70 sq.km., is located west of the Heraklion Urban Complex and borders on the east with the Municipality of Heraklion, on the southwest with the Municipality of Anogia, on the south with the Municipalities of Heraklion and Gortynas and the west with Mylopotamos. At the same time, it is washed by the Cretan Sea in the north. Administratively it belongs to the Prefecture of Heraklion. The permanent population of the Municipality according to the inventory of EL.STAT. of 2011, amounts to 24,864 inhabitants.
The Municipality of Malevizi is a Municipality of the Region of Crete that was established with the Kallikratis Program after the merger of the Kapodistrian Municipalities of Gazi, Krousonas and Tylissos.
In terms of population, it is one of the largest Municipalities of the Prefecture of Heraklion and part of the more expansive metropolitan centre together with the Municipality of Heraklion.
Gazi is the seat of the Municipality at a distance of 7 km from Heraklion. The broader area of Gazi is a critical traffic junction of the Northern Road Axis of Crete (VOAK), as it connects the Prefectures of Heraklion and Rethymnon and the northern coast with the hinterland and the Southern Road Axis of the island.
