Paleokastro Beach - Venetian lime kiln
To the right of Paleokastro Beach (located in the homonymous settlement), a Venetian lime kiln is preserved to this day. The monument has been restored to its original form, while a metal structure has been added to protect it from the weather. Also, a protective metal railing has been placed on the door, which prevents reckless entrance to the monument.
The lime kiln is one of the best examples of such constructions in the whole of Crete and seems to be connected with the fortress of Paleokastro, with which it coexisted for centuries. The importance of the lime kiln lies in the fact that it is a remarkable and rare example of a craft building of the Venetian era, which is known mainly for its fortified architecture. Finally, it should be noted that this monument is depicted, in precisely the same form, on a map by the Italian cartographer Francesco Basilicata of 1618.
