Agios Savvas Church
The Byzantine church of Agios Savvas is located on a small hill, very close to the National Road. The church was built in its first form during the 10th century by Nikiforos Fokas, liberator of Crete from the Arabs. Around the temple, there was a monastery, which was very famous. According to tradition, the monastery had 300 monks whom the Arabs slaughtered, so the monastery was abandoned. The surviving monks of Agios Savvas probably retired to a protected area and then founded the current Savvathian Monastery, located 14 kilometres northwest of Gazi.
The church of Agios Savvas, which celebrates on December 5th, was restored in 2002 by the Kefalogiannis family and today is a real gem for the wider area.
