Chapel of Agios Georgios and Timios Stavros at Moni
The double martyr chapel of Agios Georgios and Timios Stavros is located in the enchanting location of Chimeftou, just 1200 meters from the village of Moni. The village is 17 km from Heraklion and is built at an altitude of 242 meters.
The chapel is surrounded by hills, and its name probably comes from the Latin Humectus, which means wet place, or from the word "hummus" or "juice". There is a cool spring at the spot. The Monastery of the Holy Cross was built on the site of Khymeftos. The monastery was granted with an act of "assignment" to the Monastery of Kavallara (located in Korfes). The double martyr chapel was erected in the field donated by Ioannis Kavrochorianos in 1924. His wife, Aikaterini, had dreamed three times that the Agios Georgios and the Holy Cross icons were located at this place. The villagers dug in the swamp and the two icons were found in the depths, under a rock.
Finally, to the east of the church, there are traces of an older church, while a short distance from the current chapel, the visitor can see a carved cell on the rock.
