Church of Agios Charalambos
The church of Agios Charalambos is located in the mountain village of Marathos, which is 13 km from Tylissos and 14 km from Gazi. The temple was built in two phases. Initially, the section from the middle to the sanctuary was built, while after years, the women’s quarters were added. In fact, there was a rock at the point of the expansion, which was not broken, but the builders built on it. Thus, today, the temple is on two different levels. We do not know the exact date of the temple, but it is estimated that it was built after 1800, as evidenced by some of its images.
Agios (Saint) Charalambos is also the protector of the village. According to tradition, the Saint (with his long white beard) stood guard on Doxa hill and kept the deadly disease of the plague away from Marathos. Every year, on Easter Sunday, a procession of the icons of Saint Charalambos, the Virgin Mary, Christ and the Resurrection takes place throughout the village.
